Our team is analyzing images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
